Cichlids spawning fast....

Postby Knoxville on 08 Mar 2010, 8:31 pm

I am a newbie so please bear with me..... I have a 55 gal with assorted cichlids in it. I noticed my OB peacock was carrying, so I put her in a 10 gal till she released her fry. She did a few weeks later. After 4 days I took her out and put her back in the 55 gal and left the fry in the 10 gal. Yesterday.... I saw My bumblebee cichlids spawning, today I noticed the female Bumblebee was carrying. I dont have another tank other than the 10 gal with the fry. Assuming she wont eat the fry cause her mouth is packed with eggs, I put her in the fry tank. All seems well on day one. A few minutes ago I noticed that The OB peacock is carrying AGAIN... Can I put her in the 10 gal with the fry and the female bumblebee? Im running out of options.

I would probably leave the adult females in the main tank for 2 weeks after spawning then 'strip' them into the 10 gal to avoid any unnecessary agression in the fry tank..

If you dont know what striping is, google or search youtube for 'cichlid stripping' for more instruction. It seems intrusive but its probably your best option..

Keep in mind that the fry will grow VERY slow in the 10 gallon tank..

Since you are limited on tanks, I totaly agree with the stripping meathod. As soon as the female spits its eating time and someone elses fry may look yummy. Sounds like your doing it right if they are breeding that often, after this brood you should let you'r peacock rest and fatten up.
